INTERNET, INTRANET and EXTRANET

Question:
What is the difference between this three terms Internet, intranet and extranet ?

Answer:
This terms indicates the three types of networks.

1.INTERNET
The internet sometimes called simply "the Net", is a world wide system of computer networks- a network of networks which users at any one computer can, if they have permission, get information from any other computer (and sometimes talk directly to users at other computers). It was conceived by the Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) of the U.S government in 1969 and was first known as the ARPANET.The original aim was to create a network that would allow users of a research computer at one university to be able to "talk to" research computers at other universities. A side benefit of ARPANET's design was that, because message could be routed or rerouted in more than one direction, the network could continue to function even if parts of it were destroyed in the event of a military attack or other disaster.
Today, the Internet is a public, cooperative, and self-sustaining facility accessible to hundreds of millions of people worldwide. Physically, the Internet uses a portion of the resources of the currently existing public telecommunication networks. Technically, what distinguishes the Internet is its use of a set of protocols called TCP/IP ( Transmission Control Protocol/ Internet protocol). Two recent adaptions of Internet technology, the internet and the extranet, also make use of the TCP/IP protocol.

For Internet users, electronic mail (e-mail) has practically replaced the postal mail service for short written transactions. Electronic mail is the most widely used application on the Net. You can also carry on live "conversations" with other computer users, using Internet Relay Chat (IRC). More recently, Internet Telephony hardware and software allows real-time voice conversations.
The most widely used part of the Internet is World Wide Web(often abbreviated "WWW" or called "the Web").Its outstanding feature is hypertext, a method of instant cross-referencing. In most Web sites, certain words or phrases appear in text of a different color than the rest; often this text is also underlined. When you select one of these words or phrases, you will be transferred to the site or page that is relevant to this word or phrase. Sometimes there ar buttons, images, or portions of images that are"clickable". If you move the pointer over a spot on a Web site and the pointer changes into a hand, this indicates that you can click an be transferred to another site.
Using the Web, you have access to millions of pages of information. Web browsing is done with a Web browser, the most popular of which are Google Chrome and Microsoft Internet Explorer. The appearance of particular Web sites may vary slightly depending on browser you use.

2.INTRANET
An intranet is private computer network that uses Internet protocols, network connectivity to securely share part of an organization's information or operations with its employees.
Sometimes the term refers only to the most visible service, the internal website. The same concepts and technologies of the internet such as clients and servers running on the Internet protocol suite are used to build an intranet. HTTP and other Internet protocols are commonly used as well, such as FTP. There is often an attempt to use Internet technologies to provide new interfaces with corporate "legacy" data an information systems.
Briefly, an intranet can be understood as "a private version of the Internet", or as a version of the Internet confined to an organization.

3. EXTRANET
An extranet is a private network that uses Internet protocols, network connectivity, and possibly the public telecommunication system to securely share part of an organization's information or operations with suppliers, vendors, partners, customers or other businesses. An extranet can be viewed as part of a company's Intranet that is extended to users outside the company (e.g: normally over the Internet). It has also been described as a "state of mind" in which the Internet is perceived as a way to do business with a preapproved set of other companies business-to-business(B2B), in isolation from all other Internet users.
Briefly, an extranet can be understood as a private intranet mapped on to the Internet or some other transmission system not accessible to the general public, but is managed by more than one company's administrators.
